My 03 celica has never had any issues since ive had it. However recently my 3rd gear has begun to grind when shifting into it, nearly 50% of the time. It sounds terrible. And feels terrible when it happens. Nothing pisses me off more than that I can honestly say. Im guessing its a synchro going bad. Other gears are fine. If its expensive to fix I'm not sure what I'll do. The car itself is worth only 5 grand or so.

I was looking at celicas do you recommend them?

Absolutely! Awesome fwd car. Super light, decently quick. Very fun to romp on. Great handling. And they're pretty damn reliable. I have 160k miles on mine. Some pretty cheap mods make it even better.

Double clutch it for the time being, should keep things at bay.
If a shop says too much, i always suggest getting a used one, and taking your old one apart to learn the rebuild process.
A brand new trans will be in the 3-4k range with labor in most cases.

MR2. I'll just say that...

I used to drive a same year corolla (same drivetrain), you ever checked out www.monkeywrenchracing.com before? Great stuff, good service

Mr2 is the way to go. But they're less practical than a Celica. And the Celica is already pretty impractical. But it does have a good trunk.

I haven't in a long time. Thanks for the link. Haven't thought about it!

Sounds like a dead/dying syncro on that gear. Learn to rev match, don't bother fixing it.

The MR2 has a surprisingly good trunk. I was looking at one before I bought my 300ZX and there is a really deep area behind the engine as sort of a rear damage buffer before the engine due to the placement mid ship. Also, any time anyone rags on the newer Celicas, I remind them that that's the same engine as a Lotus Elise :p

I do rev match. The main problem upshifting to 3rd.

Cool I was looking at an 1986 model and I am considering it.

That could be a sweet ride. Pull the trigger!

What would you say a fair price for one would be?
![]() 06/08/2014 at 20:11 |

Depends, but 2 to 3500 or so. There's some low mileage ones that could be worth close to 5 or so.

Think a guy asking for $2000 would take $1500-$1700
![]() 06/08/2014 at 20:17 |

Maybe. 1500 might be a bit low. How many miles?
![]() 06/08/2014 at 21:55 |

180000
![]() 06/08/2014 at 22:21 |

Then you could try 1500

Cool I might contact the guy tomorrow.

Never mind I looked on a map and it is too far away. I will keep looking though.

known problem in my car, just replace the gearbox oil every 20k does the trick
